Watch Hiatus Kaiyote breathing under water

It is not very often that we hear of a very wonderful music band or artist from Australia. Maybe Lorde but not any other name that I know of, or goes by the name Hiatus Kaiyote.

Hiatus Kaiyote is a 2013 Grammy nominated future and neo-soul band. The band was formed in 2011 and since then, they took the world and the Grammys by storm with their debut album, Tawk Tomahawk. Led by a very eccentric and colorful female singer/guitarist, by the name of Nia Palm, they recently released a single, ‘breathing underwater‘. from their highly anticipated follow-up album, Choose your weapon.

I guess our role as artists is to stimulate the imaginations of people, and hopefully that’s timeless, instead of just having me in a bikini or some shit- Nia Palm

Going from their dress style, you might be tempted to put them in a box and write them off but please don’t. You need to listen to this track to know how great this band sounds. Having a lot of influence from the living music legend,  Stevie Wonder and listening to rap artist like Kendrick Lamar, is enough to say how musically rich they are. Moreover, their music can be described as a blend of soul, swing, jazz, hip-hop and a bit of electronic groove. A good mixture of everything worth listening to. To be honest, they took me by surprise too.

According to Nia Palm, she wrote the song from an inspiration to impress Stevie Wonder. After listening to this track, I am sure he won’t be the only one impressed.

If you want to know more about them and what Hiatus means, then read the interview they had with okayplayer 2 years ago. An interesting piece.
